When a house is built, a good builder will be careful to use good materials and follow a blueprint regarding construction. A good roofer does the same thing. Their purpose is to build, maintain and repair roofs. Many people do not understand what is required to be a good roofer.
Weight of Materials that must be carried to a Roof
A roofer must have stamina, balance and no fear of heights. This is especially true in the heavy materials that must be carried up a ladder prior to application.
- Shingles
A bundle of asphalt shingles weighs between 60 and 80 pounds. It takes 3 bundles of shingles to cover 100 square feet and weighs approximately 250 pounds.
- Metal Panels
It must be remembered that metal roofing panels are just that, panels. Their weight depends on the type of material (i.e. galvanized steel, sheet metal, aluminum, etc.). For example, a 12 inch aluminum metal roofing panel can weigh as much as 10 pounds.
- Slate Shingles
Slate singles, also called tiles, are the heaviest of roofing materials with their weight depending on the thickness. It weighs between 800 to 1,000 pounds per square and requires the use of a pulley to get the materials to the roof.
- Wood Shingles
The weight of wood shingles, or shakes, depends on the type of roof being installed and varies from 50 to 80 pounds per bundle.
- Concrete Tile
Concrete tiles weigh between 9 1/2 to 12 pounds per square foot. This often requires the use of a pulley.
Roofers Balance and Stamina
Roofs come in many shapes and sizes. While the standard home usually has a simple gable roof, things such as pyramid, curved, hip and many others are often chosen for a specific situation. This requires a roofer to maintain their balance while applying the required materials.
Roofer’s Responsibilities
It is the roofer’s responsibility to advise the homeowner of options available in materials which will best fit their roof requirements. This may include a membrane of polyethylene and rubberize asphalt that will prevent water from seeping under the roof covering and damaging the home and its contents.
Maryland roofers must follow strict federal and state regulations regarding roofing. City and local requirements may also apply.
Having a local roofer contractor who is conscientious in their work, and aware of required roofing laws, is essential when making the selection of a company that is to install, or make repairs on, your roof.
Roofer’s Qualifications
A licensed roofer must also be knowledgeable regarding types of roofing materials, their weight on the existing roof and manufacturer’s warranties. They must also be able to advise the customer on the best type of shingles or other supplies that will fit their particular situation.
A roofing contractor’s reputation is soon established in a community. This means that the public can easily determine who is best qualified to install or repair a roof.
